In this Falling Walls Breakthrough Conversation, digital participants had the chance to engage in a live conversation with Jeyhan Kartaltepe. She talked about her role as project lead of COSMOS-Webb, the largest James Webb Space Telescope program to be observed in its first year of operations and discussed what we can learn from space exploration. The interview series provided an intimate personal atmosphere, in which high-level guests, speakers and panelists of the Falling Walls Science Summit 2022 talked about their individual research, career paths and experiences.

Jeyhan Kartaltepe

Rochester Institute of Technology

Dr. Kartaltepe is an astrophysicist in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She was born in San Antonio, Texas, then moved to different parts of the US for her BA, MS, PhD, and postdoc before settling in Rochester, New York. She is an expert in the area of galaxy formation and evolution and is interested in understanding how the first stars and galaxies in the universe formed and how various physical processes shaped their transformation into today’s galaxies. She is the PI of COSMOS-Web, the largest James Webb Space Telescope program to be observed in its first year of operations, which will map out a large area of the sky in the near- and mid-infrared to study how galaxies in the early universe formed in relation to structures on large scales. She is also a leading co-I on the CEERS program, one of the first programs to obtain observations this summer.

Aline Luckgen

Springer Nature

Aline obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in bioengineering at Rice University in the USA and at the EPFL in Switzerland, respectively, completing short research internships in India, France and Japan during her studies. She completed her PhD at the Technical University in Berlin, where she investigated the degradation behavior of alginate-based hydrogels. Aline joined the Biotechnology team at Nature Communications in June 2020, where she now handles manuscripts in the areas of bioengineering and biomaterials.
