Resource-efficient Digitalisation: The Key to a Sustainable Future

Magdalena Skipper is Editor in Chief of Nature and Chief Editorial Advisor for the Nature portfolio. Previously, she served as Editor in Chief of Nature Communications, Executive Editor for the Nature Partner portfolio, Senior Editor at Nature and Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Genetics. She has a keen interest in promoting open science practices and publishing innovation that looks beyond standard manuscript publishing. In her role as Editor in Chief of Nature, she works towards fostering interdisciplinary and collaborative research, with an emphasis on inclusion across diverse stakeholder groups. A geneticist by training, she holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK. She sits on the advisory board of the Centre for Personalized Medicine at the University of Oxford, the newly created Einstein Foundation for Promoting Quality in Research and the NAS Strategic Council for Research Excellence, Integrity and Trust. She presides over the jury for the Nature Award for Mentoring in Science and the Nature Award for Inspiring Women in Science. She is a Fellow of the International Science Council.

Benjamin Brake has been head of the newly created “Digital and Data Policy” department at the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) since March 1. Mr. Brake previously worked for IT service provider IBM, where he represented the company’s political interests for around 10 years as head of the Berlin office. He began his career with stints in the German Bundestag and as personal assistant to the Federal Minister of Justice, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger (FDP).

Mei Lin Fung is Chair of the People Centered Internet building resilient communities with digital supply chains and finance, harnessing data so that all community members can thrive. She is on the Executive Committee of the IEEE Humanitarian and SSIT groups. She is on the advisory council of Govstack, a UN initiative to develop common technology building blocks for digital government services and was named a 2022 Hasso Plattner Institute Fellow. She worked at intel and Oracle.

Peter Koerte has been Chief Strategy Officer at Siemens since February 2020, and in October 2020 he additionally took on the role of Chief Technology Officer. In these functions he is responsible for the development of corporate strategy as well as the digitization and establishment of the Xcelerator (X). He reports directly to the CEO of Siemens AG.

Peter began his career at Siemens in 2007 in Corporate Strategy. In 2011 he moved to Siemens’ healthcare business, where he held several management positions in high-margin units in diagnostics. Most recently, he headed the Digital Health unit for the development of AI-based diagnostic procedures in medicine. Before joining Siemens AG, he worked for the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

Peter holds a joint master’s degree in mechanical engineering and business administration from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, a Ph.D. in strategy and international management from WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management and completed the General Management Program at the Harvard Business School.

Christoph Meinel is CEO and Scientific Director of the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering gGmbH (HPI). Christoph Meinel holds the chair of Internet Technologies and Systems. He is engaged in the fields of cybersecurity and digital education. He has developed the MOOC platform openHPI.de, supervises numerous Ph.D. students, and is a teacher at the HPI School of Design Thinking, where he is also scientifically active in research. Earlier scientific work concentrated on efficient algorithms and complexity theory.

Christoph Meinel is author or co-author of more than 25 books, anthologies, as well as numerous conference proceedings. He has had more than 550 (peer-reviewed) papers published in scientific journals and at international conferences and holds a number of international patents. He is a member of the National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech), director of the HPI-Stanford Design Thinking Research Program, honorary professor at the TU Beijing, visiting professor at Shanghai University, concurrent professor at the University of Nanjing, and member of numerous scientific committees and supervisory boards.
