Democracy is at risk. All around the world, democratic states, governments and democratic values that lie at the core of a peaceful and equal society are being weakened and eroded, thus paving the way for anti-democratic sentiments and systems. A historian and anthropologist and Professor at the University of São Paulo, Lilia Moritz Schwarcz has shown in the past how the decline of Brazilian institutions underestimated the role of race, gender and inequality in this process. The deeply rooted slave system, that generated cruelty and exploitation led to structural oppression that affects Brazil and its population until today. At Falling Walls, Moritz Schwarcz outlines the path through which democracies can slowly become autocracies. At the same time, she shows how vigilant democratic engagement and the integration of new concepts and fresh principles may be used in nations around the world to preserve democracy.
