Jupiter Ionics: Breaking the Wall to Carbon-Free Fertilisers
Jupiter Ionics is a seed stage startup company developing a new approach to manufacturing carbon-neutral ammonia and ammonia derivatives. The company is built on the foundation of research conducted in the laboratory of Prof Doug Macfarlane at Monash University, to which the company has an exclusive worldwide licence.
The company’s technology uses a novel electrochemical pathway to produce ammonia which, when powered by renewable energy, is carbon free “Green Ammonia”. Current approaches to ammonia production typically produce 2 tonnes of CO2 for every tonne of ammonia produced, and 80% of the world’s current ammonia production is used to produce fertiliser, which is essential to global food security. Decarbonisation of the ammonia production process is therefore a high priority if the world is to successfully address the risk of climate change.
Jupiter Ionics’ flexible and modular technology makes possible new approaches to tackle this urgent and difficult decarbonisation challenge.
