This initiative engages deaf students – 18-year-olds and older – together with their families and communities through docu-drama formats to guide and strengthen the genetics research of hearing impairment. A science communication toolkit composed of two 25-minute docu-dramas was developed for that purpose: one film based on sign language is used by researchers to engage deaf students in Ghanaian schools. The second film – using sound – is directed at their families and communities.

Docu-Drama to Engage the Hearing Impaired
Kyerewaa Akuamoah Boateng works with research Scientists at the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens, University of Ghana as the Community and Public Engagement Manager. She spearheads and leads several initiatives that seek to bring science closer to the public. She is passionate about Science appreciation among girls, global health issues, particularly in infectious diseases and culturally appropriate communication in low-income settings.
