Colorectal cancer is one of the most frequent cancers globally. A large proportion of people have modifiable risk factors, such as weight and diet. Coffee is the main source of chlorogenic acid, the most abundant polyphenol in natural products. Hernán Villota argues that these polyphenolic compounds could have a preventive or therapeutic effect against cancer.

Hernan Villota is an MSc student in Biomedical Engineering at the Instituto Tecnologico Metropolitano (ITM-Colombia). His thesis focuses mainly on the characterization of the effect of polyphenols present in coffee extracts on the modulation of Wnt/β-catenin Pathway on in vitro models of colorectal cancer CCR. Previously, Hernan Villota focused on the study of Ruthenium complexes against in vitro models of gallbladder cancer. This study was done at the Cancerlab (UCN-Chile).
