The nominating institution CISPA on the breakthrough:

The mission: Build a Corona Warn App that warns users if they have been near an infected person. How to do this while protecting anonymity? Based on our work with DP-3T, the privacy-preserving exposure tracing protocol that makes the scientific foundation for the German Corona Warn app, we ensured the app implements it securely. The app protects millions of citizens, and is one of the largest privacy-by-design systems ever deployed, and will soon even enable exposure notification across borders.

Cas Cremers

CISPA - Helmholtz-Zentrum für Informationssicherheit gGmbH

Prof. Dr. Cas Cremers is a faculty member at the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security, and Professor of Computer Science at Saarland University, in Saarbruecken, Germany. He obtained his PhD from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. From 2006 to 2013 he was a researcher and lecturer at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. In 2013 he moved to Oxford as an Associate Professor, and was appointed in 2015 to Professor of Information security at the University of Oxford. In 2018 he moved to Germany to join the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security.
