As one of the top researchers in ultrashort-pulsed lasers for industrial applications, Prof. Dr. Andreas Tünnermann also focuses on the practical application of his scientific work in everyday life. By initiating and coordinating the research initiative QuNET, he pushes the boundaries of the emerging field of quantum communication towards a future implementation of the technology in real communication networks. As quantum communication enables a secure communication for the digital society of the future it is widely recognised as one of the key technologies for stable democracies.

Breaking the Wall to Quantum Communication Networks
Andreas Tünnermann
Prof. Dr. Andreas Tünnermann is Spokesman for the Max Planck School of Photonics, head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena and is chairman of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Fraunhofer Society. At the same time he is director of the Institute for Applied Physics at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and a member of the board of directors of the Helmholtz Institute Jena. In 2005 he was awarded the Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation for his research in the field of fiber lasers. In 2011 he received the Order of Merit of the Free State of Thuringia.
