With senseBox one can build, create and easily code stationary or mobile devices equipped with sensors for environmental phenomena like temperature, air quality or light pollution. The devices are connected to the internet and submit the measurements to the IoT-platform openSenseMap. The project is a breakthrough because it empowers children, citizens and professionals in the acquisition of data about our world, by educating them in 21st century skills like coding, creativity, critical thinking. It teaches scientific, computational and spatial literacy at a time. senseBox is being used in schools, universities, in STEM-subjects, libraries and in citizen science projects. Out of a BMBF-funded research project at the university of Münster, senseBox has spinned-of the edtech start-up re:edu.
