Breaking the Wall to Communal Scientific Funding

SOFA proposes a more efficient system to distribute research funding than the present grant proposal review process. All researchers periodically receive an equal and unconditional base amount of funding, but they have to donate a fraction of everything they receive to other researchers of their choice. As such, funding circulates towards the collective wisdom of the entire scientific community. SOFA saves a lot of time and resources, because it does not require proposal writing nor peer review.

Johan Bollen

Indiana University

Johan Bollen is a professor of informatics at Indiana University. He obtained his PhD in Experimental Psychology from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in 2001. He has published more than 75 articles on computational social science, social complexity, health, well-being, machine learning, and informetrics. His research has been funded by the NSF, DARPA, IARPA, EDA, NASA, and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Johan lives in Bloomington, Indiana with his wife and daughter. In his free time he enjoys DJing in the local Bloomington clubs as DJ Angst.
