The nominating institution Quantum Technologies on the breakthrough:

Optical clocks are a promising application of quantum technology. When commercially available, they will unleash new applications: from synchronisation of IT networks to navigation to environmental sensing. Partners from industry, university and research institutes have joined forces to demonstrate the world’s first turnkey optical clock, with performance gain by one order of magnitude over all existing commercial clocks.

Jürgen Stuhler

Quantum Technologies

Jürgen Stuhler is head of the business unit at Quantum Technologies at TOPTICA. He coordinates the opticlock project and is involved in three European quantum flagship projects. Before joining TOPTICA in 2006, he was group leader at the University of Stuttgart, with experiments on chromium Bose-Einstein condensation and Rydberg excitation of rubidium. From 2001 to 2003, he set up an atom interferometer to measure the Newtonian gravitational constant at the European Laboratory for Non-linear Spectroscopy in Florence. He studied physics at the University of Constance and obtained his PhD in 2001.
