The digital coach goes far beyond traditional reactive ‘FAQ-bot’ approaches by pro-actively engaging with students and starting conversations to ensure they settle into university life with the best support possible; making personalised recommendations for societies to join, asking how students are feeling and nudging students towards activities that can help them integrate into university life. Delivered via a specifically designed mobile app, employing AI to understand the intent of student conversations and constantly refine and improve the information and recommendations provided. AI is a disruptive technology with huge potential yet to be realised across higher education. The Beacon project was created to design and implement the UK’s first AI-driven digital coach for students.
