The nominating institution FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg on the breakthrough:

Imagine reading books without opening them. This old dream now comes true in the lab of AI researcher Andreas Maier at FAU, Germany. He uses this magic for fragile historic documents with inaccessible secrets between the walls of their book covers. Technologies from medical engineering – from X-ray CT scan to the virtual flattening of the page image – allow the reading of a book without opening and destroying it and build his breakthrough approach to accessing otherwise inaccessible documents.
