Since 2015, Sabino has participated in international efforts to establish a rapid research response to emerging threats. When the COVID-19 epidemic started, her group was able to publish the complete genome sequence of the virus. This was only 2 days after Latin America’s first case, possibly setting a world record.

Ester Sabino

University of Sao Paulo

Ester Sabino is professor of infectious disease at the University of Sao Paulo. She collaborated with the Brazilian AIDS Program to create a national laboratory network. In 2005, Sabino organized a blood bank network to participate in the USA REDS program, focused on blood safety. She has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers and has directly trained over 50 graduation students.
