Paradigm is inspired by ideas of science and is a metaphor for potential; the potential to grow, take risks, and be bold and brave. These are all qualities which are necessary for scientific progress and reflect the ambition and intention of the Crick Institute. I chose weathered steel as the material for the sculpture because it is true to the industrial history of the area and is designed to be robust and practical. Starting from the base, each subsequent tetrahedron grows steadily in volume.

Conrad Shawcross Studio

Conrad Shawcross’ sculptures explore subjects that lie on the borders of geometry and philosophy, physics and metaphysics. He has completed a number of major public commissions, including Paradigm outside the Francis Crick Institute in London and the 18-metre tall Exploded Paradigm inside the atrium of the Comcast Technology Center in Philadelphia. He has exhibited at institutions across the world, including Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania, Wadsworth Atheneum in Connecticut, USA, the National Gallery in London, and ARTMIA in Beijing.
