Today, molecular biology is not always related to transgenesis-based genetic engineering. Genome editing techniques such as CRISPR-Cas9 may revolutionize classic genetic engineering techniques. More than 14,000 international research papers have been published since 2012, and this number will continue to grow.

Putranto is an expert in plant physiology using molecular biology approaches. He also  uses genomic, transcriptomic, as well as metagenomics analysis (differential gene expression) using bioinformatics tools. His current research includes developing CRISPR/Cas9 methodology in oil palm, as well as plant-derived products with in silico modelling and synthetic biology.
