The nominating institution Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research on the breakthrough:

In February, SORMAS was extended by a module for the control of COVID-19. Since then, it supports international health authorities in risk assessment and disease control. SORMAS is already used in Ghana and Nigeria, and the governments of 8 other countries have also decided to use it. The software has been specially adapted to the needs of the health authorities and nationwide implementation.

Gérard Krause

Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research

Krause completed his PhD in tropical hygiene, and spent his postgraduate training in Germany, USA and the UK. He was department head and state epidemiologist at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin from 2000 to 2013. Currently, Krause is chair for infectious disease epidemiology at Hannover Medical School and head of the epidemiology department at Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research.
