The nominating institute Max-Planck Institute on the project:

Progress in biology and medicine hinges on the availability of powerful tools, as was made clear again by the current pandemic. The imminent next revolution in biology will be driven by the exploration of emergent physical phenomena at cellular scales, like the mechanical properties of cells. Real-time deformability cytometry (RT-DC) is a new tool for assessing the physical phenotype of cells at rates of 1000 cells/second, a throughput not previously possible. We apply this technology to analyse millions of cells and prove the potential to revolutionise cell-based analysis and diagnostics.
