Helga Nowotny is President and founding member of the European Research Council, established by the European Commission in 2007 to fund investigator-driven frontier research by supporting and encouraging the best scientists, scholars and engineers to go beyond established frontiers of knowledge and the boundaries of disciplines. Her work as a researcher includes more than 300 articles published in scientific journals on topics such as social studies of science and technology, macrosociology and the impact of the life sciences on society. Her teaching career has included among other, positions at the Institute of Advanced Study in Vienna, King’s College, Cambridge, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris and the University of Vienna. Helga Nowotny is Professor Emerita of ETH Zurich. She is a Foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, a long standing member the Academia Europaea and the recipient of several prizes and awards like the J.D. Bernal Prize, for her life-long achievements in the social studies of science.
