Sang Yup Lee is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Vice President for Research at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He is also a pioneering leader in metabolic engineering, a technology used to redesign bacteria so that they produce valuable compounds such as biofuels or medicines. He is Fellow of Korean Academy of Science and Technology, National Academy of Engineering Korea, American Academy of Microbiology, American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, World Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Inventors, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology. International Member of both National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering, USA, and also Foreign Member of the Royal Society, UK. He is a strong advocate for greater research to improve biotechnological applications and the need for public dialogue to map the associated risks and solutions.
