“Julich-Brain” is the first 3D-atlas of the human brain that reflects the variability of the brain’s structure on the micro-level. It features close to 250 areas, more than 24000 brain sections were digitized, assembled in 3D and mapped. Big Data workflows and algorithms to detect areas helped assemble a never before seen view of the brain’s organization. EBRAINS, a powerful new infrastructure for neuroscience, will now make it easy for scientists worldwide to link their findings to the atlas.

Forschungszentrum Jülich

Professor Dr. Katrin Amunts is director of the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine at Forschungszentrum Jülich and C. & O. Vogt Institute for Brain Research at Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf. To better understand why the human brain is so uniquely powerful, she and her team create ultra high-resolution digital brain atlases in 3D. As Research Director of the Human Brain Project, she also oversees a massive European collaboration of over 100 institutions to build “EBRAINS”, a shared research infrastructure for neuroscience and neural technologies.
