The quest for unusual materials, such as metallic hydrogen or room-temperature superconductors, has been going on for decades. Mikhail Eremets has pioneered high pressure experiments to induce such states, which brought about innovations in materials science, but also high-pressure technology. The group has achieved recent breakthroughs in this field, including superconductivity at 203K in H3S (2015) and at 250 K in LaH10 (2019), or semimetallic hydrogen above 250 GPa (2019).

Max-Planck-Institut for Chemistry

Mikhail Ivanovich Eremets was born in Pinsk region, Belarus 03.01.1949. He studied physics at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute. In 1978 he received his Ph.D. at the Moscow Institute of General Physics Academy of Sciences. He worked in the High Pressure Physics Institute of Academy of Sciences of Russia, Troitsk, Moscow region as researcher and then as Director of the High-Pressure Physics Department. After 1991 he worked in the best high pressure laboratories over the world: in France (University Paris 6), Japan (NIMS and Osaka University), USA (Geophysical Laboratory), UK (Clarendon Laboratory) and others. From 2001 to present Mikhail Eremets is a staff member of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz and he leads the research group “High-pressure chemistry and physics”.
