Species and natural ecosystems are disappearing at alarming rates. This is due to land use, drought and global warming. We’re only beginning to understand properties that stabilise species communities and their interactions. Blüthgen has developed novel methods to understand such ecological networks and improve sustainable grassland management, or recovery of degraded forests.

Nico Blüthgen

TU Darmstadt

Nico Blüthgen studied biology in Marburg, Würzburg, Duke University and Bonn. His dissertation investigated ant-plant interactions in Australia. As a postdoc in Würzburg, he studied various rainforest insects in Borneo, as well as grasslands and forests in Germany. Since 2011, Blüthgen has been a professor for ‘ecological networks’ in Darmstadt, where his lab investigates various topics related to the ecology, physiology and diversity of insects, their interactions and ecosystem functions.
