The nominating institution Uppsala University on the breakthrough:

The project explores how vulnerability – in relation to people, animals and the environment – can be re-thought as something more than a lamentable condition from which subjects should be defended, rescued or liberated. How is vulnerability produced and distributed in the social and natural worlds, and in political life? Vulnerability makes moral demands about accountability and responsibility. Seeing vulnerability as productive shifts the focus of research, awareness and ethical engagement.
