Our app encourages students to drive their own learning experience via interaction with a 3D anatomical model in augmented reality. Whilst a number of anatomy applications use augmented reality, none concentrate on ocular anatomy in detail. The breakthrough is our integration of a Learn mode coupled with an adaptive Assess mode providing immediate formative feedback. Innovative higher-order questions require interaction with the model to strengthen the learning through spatially complex tasks. The app pushes beyond aesthetics, creating a transformative environment in AR that is not possible with 2D resources.

Simon Backhouse is a Senior Lecturer in Vision Science. Simon is a clinician-educator with an interest in ocular anatomy, refractive error, and educational research. His goal is to use emergent technologies to create unique, authentic learning resources that empower student achievement.

James Armitage is a Professor or Optometry. James is a clinician-educator with an interest in ocular disease, physiological and educational research. His goal in this role is to enable staff to develop and refine a truly innovative and student-centred optometry clinical training program.
