This creates severe tensions with our dominant economic model and our sense of international openness. Our analytical concept helps to determine the criticality of technologies and the nature and degree of sovereignty needed. It helps to develop modified – European – strategies that strike an appropriate balance between independence and interdependence.

Prof. Dr. Jakob Edler has been Managing Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI since October 2018. He is also Professor of Innovation Policy and Strategy at the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIoIR), which he lead from 2011 to September 2018. Before moving to MIoIR in January 2007, he worked at Fraunhofer ISI in the Innovation Systems and Politics department, initially as a research assistant (1999-2004), then as deputy head of department (2004-2006) and finally as head of department (2006).
