NMR is of major importance in biology, chemistry, medicine, and physics, as it gives access to molecular structure and revolutionised medical imaging. But the poor sensitivity of current NMR technology prevents its application to single proteins or the imaging of cellular metabolic processes. Quantum technologies based on atomic scale lattice defects in diamond to achieve nanoscale NMR and a new source for nuclear spin hyperpolarisation are set to overcome these limits.

Martin Plenio

Ulm University

He got his Diploma (1992) and PhD (1994) in Physics from Göttingen University. 1995 – 1997 Martin plenio was Feodor Lynen postdoctoral fellow at Imperial College with Sir Peter Knight. Also at Imperial College, Martin established his own group as Lecturer in 1998, became Full Professor of Quantum Physics in 2003. As one of the first German Alexander von Humboldt Professors, he moved to Ulm in 2009. There, co-founded NVision Imaging Technologies in 2016, which aims to commercialise the research projects that he is pursuing jointly with Professor Fedor Jelezko. Martin Plenio is also Director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, director and establisher of the Center for Quantum Bio-Sciences and he leads the Controlled Quantum Dynamics group at Ulm University.
