Schembri-Wismayer and Jasra’s method for rapidly producing pluripotent stem cells uses small-molecule inducers without a feeder layer, resulting in reduced risk and much greater clinical use potential. This is a major improvement over other methods currently on the market. Safe and high-quality iPSCs, specific to an individual, will help researchers develop new therapies faster, with all cell types, potentially benefitting millions of patients.

Pierre Schembri-Wismayer Ila Tewari Jasra

University of Malta

Pierre Schembri-Wismayer qualified as MD from the University of Malta. He pursued a PhD in oncology at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, Glasgow University. Teaching anatomy, he researches stem cells, cancer immunotherapy, viral and differentiation therapy and anatomical biomechanics, patenting a hip prosthesis. Ila Tewari Jasra earned her PhD on induced pluripotent stem cells. She worked in a GMP grade environment in the commercial stem cell industry, and will head technological development of the new company being spun out.
