Berlin, Germany, 1 November 2022 – Which are the next walls to fall in science and society? On 8 November global leaders in science, politics, business, and society will discuss the current challenges and the possible solutions interdisciplinary action can offer now. The main Circle Day programme will be broadcast via livestream from 9AM until 6PM on the homepage of the Falling Walls Foundation. The debates will be followed by a Q&A round with the in-person and online audience.
From food security to energy sovereignty and scientific collaboration, the implications of the war in Ukraine inform the agenda of this year’s Circle Day. At the Plenary Table “ How to Restart Science in Ukraine after the Russian Aggression?”, Head of the Scientific Committee of the National Scientific Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Kolezhuk, President of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Julia von Blumenthal, Pawel Rowinski of Polish Academy of Sciences and other experts discuss how international community can support science in Ukraine now and what role it can play in rebuilding the Ukrainian scientific landscape.
Ertharin Cousin, CEO of Food Systems for the Future, Joachim von Braun of The Center for Development Research, University of Bonn and experts discuss the ongoing food crisis and possible immediate steps that can contribute to international food security. The Chair of the People-Centered Internet Mei Ling Fung and fellow panelists address the way digital technologies can contribute to climate mitigation and necessary policies for more efficient sustainable digital transformation. Scientific Director of Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin Bernd Rech and other participants of the Planery Table “The Future of Clean Technologies” discuss how resource-efficient energy technologies can accelerate transition to climate-neutral circular economy via. Other Plenary Table topics include collaboration between policy and society to foster planetary health action, global mental health plan with focus on dementia and depression and AI in healthcare.
The Round Table programme features expert talks on advances in programmable chemistry for innovative drug discovery and adoption of zero carbon materials, interaction between science and politics, confidence in scientific research, solutions for more sustainable healthcare, future trends in mobility and others. Among the notable speakers are Armaghan Naghipour, State Secretary for Science, Research and Equality in Berlin, Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council, Geraldine Rauch, President of Technische Universität Berlin, Janette Wiget, CFO of Merantix and co-founder of the AI Campus Berlin and Peta Ashworth, Chair in Sustainable Energy Futures at The University of Queensland, and others.
The Circle agenda also includes four scientific symposia: Symposium for Breakthroughs in Life Sciences, Volkswagen Foundation Symposium for Breakthrough in Social Science and Humanities, Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Symposium for Breakthroughs in Physical Sciences and Sciencepreneurship Symposium.
