Susanne Burger has been Director General “European and International Cooperation in Education and Research” at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research sind October 2018. In her former roles she was Head of Directorate “Europe” (2013-2018) and Head of of Division “Education and Research” for the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union in Brussels (2009-2013). In 2002, she served as the Head of Division for “EU Education Programmes and International Cooperation in Education”, and in 1998 as the Head of Division “Education Policy Issues”. From 1990 until 1998 she was among the staff of the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Brussels and a desk officer at the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union in Brussels. These posts followed positons as Personal Assistant to the Parliamentary State Secretary (1987-1990) at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and as Desk Officer for Eastern Asia at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law, Freiburg. Susanne Burger studied law in Nanjing, China and in Tübingen. She also holds a M.A. degree in East Asian Studies.
