Ute Frevert is a historian of modern Europe specializing in social and cultural history, and a director at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin. Before joining the Max Planck Society, she was a full professor at FU Berlin, University of Constance, University of Bielefeld and Yale University. In 1998, she was the recipient of the Leibniz Prize.
She is a member of various academies (BBAW, Leopoldina, British Academy) and received the Bundesverdienstkreuz Erster Klasse in 2016. Her publications include Men of Honour: A Social and Cultural History of the Duel (1995); A Nation in Barracks: Modern Germany, Military Conscription and Civil Society (2004); Emotions in History – Lost and Found (2011).
