In 2011, Japan experienced a natural disaster that caused overwhleming damage and now the country is combating the COVID-19 pandemic. What can be learnt from these monumental events? Join a panel of Japanese and German experts to discuss disaster medicine, international relations, resilient society and disaster memorial.

Professor
Professor of International Cooperation for Disaster Medicine, IRIDeS since 2012. Prof. Egawa is a medical doctor, surgeon specialized in pancreas. He served as the headquarter of Tohoku University Hospital at the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Research specialty in disaster medicine, medical needs and effective response after disaster.

Verena Blechinger-Talcott studied Japanese Studies, Political Science and Law at the LMU Munich, where she also received her doctorate in Political Science in 1997. Since 2004 she has been Professor of Japanese Politics and Economics in the Department of History and Cultural Studies at the FU Berlin. She is also Vice-President, responsible for international affairs, diversity and sustainable development in research and teaching.

Assistant Professor
Julia Gerster received a Ph.D. in Japanese Studies with a disciplinary focus in Cultural Anthropology at Free University of Berlin. Since 2019, she works as Assistant Professor at the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) at Tohoku University. Her main research interests include the dynamics of social relations after disasters, recovery processes, the handling of negative heritage as well as identity and community building.

Social Scientist and Senior Researcher
Daniel F. Lorenz is a social scientist and senior researcher at the Disaster Research Unit (DRU) at Free University of Berlin, Germany. He has conducted empirical research, for instance, in Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Portugal and Greece. His research interests include various social science issues in the context of disasters and humanitarian emergencies such as social vulnerability and resilience.

Martin Voss is an inter and transdisciplinary working sociologist, university professor for social scientific disaster research, the head of the Disaster Research Unit (DRU) at the Free University of Berlin, Germany, and CEO of the non-profit company “Academy of the Disaster Research Unit (ADRU)”. His areas of specialization encompass the whole disaster management cycle, beginning with the perception of existential risks and ending with sustainable practices to secure wellbeing.
