RETHINKING Obstacles: Telepresence and Bridges to the Future

ETH Zürich | Lora V. Koycheva, Markus Gross, Rafael Hostettler

Together we will connect the dots from Berlin to Zurich, from engineering to society, and from the present to the future.

Thriving in the face of significant adversity and overcoming obstacles is a unique human ability. Engineering embodies the resilience and inventiveness of the human spirit. It is this spirit that is, perhaps, best represented by the iconic bridges and viaducts of Switzerland. These soaring structures bridge gaps and  make new connections – making the improbable  possible. Join us and together we will connect the dots from Berlin to Zurich, from engineering to society, and from the present to the future.  “Roboy,” an advanced humanoid robot developed using artificial intelligence,  will create a special and real-time  connection to a prominent ETH Zurich and Disney Research speaker. This symposium brings together a panel of unique perspectives – an anthropologist, a roboticist, and a scientist who will showcase how embodied telepresence robotics is already building exciting, unexpected, and unanticipated bridges.

PUBLIC PANEL DISCUSSON ON-SITE AND VIA LIVESTREAM. PLEASE REGISTER.

This is a digital event. If you would like to attend the event via livestream, please book your spot here. The access to the event will be provided through the organiser and after registration.

Lora V. Koycheva

TU München, Roboy Germany

Senior Research Associate

Lora Koycheva became an anthropologist because she likes thinking, dwelling, and acting in multiples – multiple worlds, multiple perspectives, and multi-disciplinary conversations. She is first and foremost drawn to the beauty of complexity and the challenges it presents – key among them the search for the new vocabularies and realities which advanced robotics and Al demand as a change in and for the world.

Markus Gross

Computer Graphics Laboratory, ETH Zürich

Professor / Head

Markus Gross is a Professor of Computer Science and head of the Computer Graphics Laboratory at ETH Zurich, Vice President of Research, The Walt Disney Studios and the director of DisneyResearch|Studios. Gross serves on the boards of numerous international research institutes, governmental organizations and has co-founded more than ten tech start-ups. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored his research with two technical achievement awards and welcomed him as member-at-large.

Rafael Hostettler

Devanthro - the Roboy Company

Born in 1985 with an unsatisfiable curiosity, Rafael Hostettler works towards a simple goal: to stay curious indefinitely. With an MSc. in Computational Science from ETH Zurich he now builds towards bio-inspired humanoid robots as good as the human body – so that at some point they can become our bodies. A logical first step: build robots that are controlled by humans in control suits, and feel as much as their own body as possible.
