Reality-TV – ein Tag im biomedizinischen Labor (DE/EN)

Wir bieten einen ungeschminkten Einblick in unsere Labore: einen Tag lang Wissenschaft, Spaß und spannende Menschen.

Wir streamen einen ganzen Tag lang das ganz normale Leben in unseren Laboren. MDC- Wissenschaftler*innen erklären, was sie gerade machen, wie und warum. Sie können ihnen über die Schulter schauen, während die Forscher*innen experimentieren. Das Publikum kann Fragen stellen, die wir entweder live oder in einer der Q&A-Kaffeepausen beantworten, egal ob es um unsere Forschung oder Ausbildung und Karrierewege in der Wissenschaft geht. Zwischendurch gibt es Live- Musik und TikToks und vieles mehr – eben das ganze normale Leben in einem biomedizinischen Labor!

Dr. Emanuel Wyler is a molecular biologist at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the research group “RNA Biology and Posttranscriptional Regulation”. He uses big data experiments to study what coronavirus and herpesvirus infections do to human cells.

We at the Junker lab study the intricate mechanisms underlying cellular decision making. Embryonic development, the generation of a whole organism from a single cell, proceeds with striking precision, even in the face of environmental perturbations. The zebrafish, our favourite model organism, can even react to injury during its adult life by regenerating tissues. We try to understand how these processes are regulated genetically in single cells.

Postdoc

Andreas Ofenbauer studied Microbiology/Genetics at the University of Vienna, but did the practical part of his master in Dresden, where he conducted embryonic kidney culture as well as biomaterial research on stem cells. Moving to Berlin for his PhD at the MDC, he started working on the geneticist’s dream of an organism, the nematode C. elegans, studying cell fate mechanisms. Besides his research, he loves to communicate science, for example as a passionate science slammer.

Jonas Peters

PhD student

Jonas Peters started out studying human biology at the Philipps University of Marburg and transferred to the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin for his master’s degree in molecular medicine. Since 2017 he is now a PhD student at the MDC / BIMSB. His focus in Systems Biology is on RNA-binding proteins in the laboratory of Professor Markus Landthaler. Project title: Translational regulation in RAF/MAPK signalling.

PhD student

Marco Uhrig is a PhD student at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the research group “Systems Biology of Gene Regulatory Elements”. He is a highly motivated and hard-working molecular biologist with over twelve years hands-on research experience.

Musician, satirist, science slammer

Karla Hajman is a biotechnologist who ditched her PhD in Experimental Audiology and Neurology to access human ears from a different perspective: that one of a full-time musician and satirist, on a mission of bringing the most complex, uncomfortable topics up close and personal. Science and scientific comedy are no exception.

Dr. Luiza Bengtsson, PhD in Biochemistry in 2002, studied & researched chemistry and humanities in Sweden, Germany and USA. In 2011, she went from life sciences research uncovering communication channels in cells to creating new channels for dialog between science and society. She now organizes science popularization events, trains high school teachers in science and researchers in Open Science and produces art-science and citizen science collaborations as well as the ORION Open Science podcast.

Training Developer

Zoe Ingram is an Educational Scientist at the MDC and working for the EU-funded ORION project on Open Science. She tests and implements training methods for researchers with a focus on finding a position on Open Science and integrating Open Science practices into everyday research life. She contributes her pedagogical knowledge to ORION and supports the implementation and development of trainings to maximise results.
