Real or Fake? A science show for the critical thinking
BesserWissen e.V. | Anita Waltho, Bradley Allen Weymer, Claudia Mohr, Daniela Kern-Michler, Tobias Löffler, Luiza Bengtsson, Tina Krell
Scientists present hot research topics with real and alternative facts in a novel science entertainment format: The Real-or-Fake-Show.
In times of real and self-proclaimed experts – how does one know how to distinguish between the alternative facts and the truth? How can we train a critical awareness of the manipulability of scientific results without preaching? Answer: Playfully. You trick your audience deliberately, but only sometimes. In the interactive, scientific Real or Fake-Show, scientists present exciting topics from their fields of expertise in genetics, geoscience, medicine etc. enticing the audience to be enlightened or tricked.
They either present fact-based stories that may sound too bizarre to be believed, or they deliberately trick the audience with their cheeky but melodious false reports. The critical audience discusses, votes on the credibility and is then surprised by the resolution. Whether one is inspired by current research topics and the job description “scientist”, or whether one is practicing to recognize a swindle – in the end everyone comes out a bit more factual. Presented by BesserWissen e.V.
ONLINE WEBINAR VIA ZOOM. PLEASE REGISTER.
This is a digital event. If you would like to attend please book your spot here.
Anita studied biochemistry at University College London, where she wrote her Master`s thesis on protein export in Malaria parasites. Now in Berlin, she is completing her PhD at the Max-Delbrück Centrum for Molecular Medicine. As a molecular biologist, Anita is studying the intricacies of a tagging system which decides the fate of our proteins, from DNA repair regulator to cellular dustbin.
Dr. Bradley Allen Weymer studies oceanography, geophysics, and coastal geology. In 2016, he graduated with a PhD in Geology, from Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA. In his academic work, Bradley has ventured on many expeditions around the globe to study the dynamics of the ocean floor and coastal systems. Since 2019, Bradley leads the project SMART – Sustainable Management of Offshore Groundwater Resources Project at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany.
Department of Environmental Science (ACES), Stockholm University, Sweden
Professor
Prof. Claudia Mohr holds a PhD in environmental sciences from ETH Zürich and has conducted research in Germany, US and Mexico, before becoming professor at Stockholm University. Her main research interest is atmospheric aerosols. She uses advanced mass spectrometric techniques to investigate aerosol particles and organic trace gases; their sources, formation and transformation processes, and their fate in the atmosphere.
Dr. Daniela Kern-Michler studied the interdisciplinary course of studies of Biophysics in Frankfurt. This field of studies is characterized by its mixture of contents and concepts from the fields of physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics and biology. She recently completed her PhD at the Department of Physics in Frankfurt in a research training group on the topic of “Complex light Control”. The topic of her thesis was a combination of ultrafast laser spectroscopy and photouncaging.
Tobias Löffler is a physicist and science communicator from Düsseldorf. He has been organising outreach events – such as science slams – at the University of Düsseldorf since 2013, but has also been a science communicator at science conferences and nights of sciences since then. In 2018 he became aware of the “Echt oder Fake” format and has been organising and moderating “Echt oder Fake” events since 2019.

Dr. Luiza Bengtsson, PhD in Biochemistry in 2002, studied & researched chemistry and humanities in Sweden, Germany and USA. In 2011, she went from life sciences research uncovering communication channels in cells to creating new channels for dialog between science and society. She now organizes science popularization events, trains high school teachers in science and researchers in Open Science and produces art-science and citizen science collaborations as well as the ORION Open Science podcast.
