Pflanzen im Einsatz gegen Corona: Führung hinter die Blätterkulissen des “Molecular Farming” mit Live-Diskussion.
Medizinische Produkte wie Impfstoffe, Medikamente oder Nachweisreagenzien werden oft mit tierischen Zellkulturen oder mit Bakterien hergestellt. Wegen der aktuellen Corona-Pandemie sind die Kapazitäten jedoch schnell ausgelastet. Hier weist die moderne Pflanzenbiotechnologie mit dem „Molecular Farming“ neue Wege. Das Fraunhofer IME demonstrierte mit seiner jüngst entwickelten automatisierten Anlage erfolgreich die Eignung der Pflanzen als „grüne Bioreaktoren“: Aktuell werden in den Aachener Laboren Teile der Hülle des Corona-Virus in Pflanzen synthetisiert und aufgereinigt, die den Nachweis von SARS-Cov2 Antikörpern im Blut von Patienten ermöglichen. Pro Woche gewinnt das Forscherteam aus 50 kg POanzenbiomasse das Material für die Herstellung von einer Million Tests. Für diesen wertvollen Beitrag zur Eindämmung der Pandemie werden keine transgenen Pflanzen benötigt. Vielmehr werden Pflanzen mit Hilfe von Bakterien zur Herstellung der gewünschten Produkte transient „umprogrammiert“.
Wie diese hochaktuelle Forschung funktioniert und umgesetzt wird, präsentiert POanzenforschung.de live im Online-Seminar: Holger Spiegel gibt Einblick in die Labore und Gewächshäuser seiner Forschungsabteilung am Fraunhofer IME. Der Biotechnologe spricht über Chancen und Herausforderungen der vielversprechenden Molecular Farming Technologie und beantwortet live die Zuschauerfragen.
