Recent results of Mexican and German research in health sciences.
The Mexican Science Day aims to bring together German and Mexican scientists in order to present the results of significant research projects in health sciences. It also seeks to encourage an interdisciplinary dialogue with the scientific and academic community and students, which could generate new collaboration opportunities for associated groups strengthening the scientific relationship between Mexico and Germany.
Welcome remarks will be given by H.E. Rogelio Granguillhome, Ambassador of Mexico to Germany, Dr. Effrosyni Chelioti, Helmholtz Association, Dr. Dietrich Halm, German Research Foundation (DFG), Christian Müller, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Dr. María Elena Álvarez Buylla, Mexican National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT)
The lectures will be given by Prof. Dr. Aarón Borgonio from the Heart Centre of the University Clinic of Cologne, Prof. Dr. Maria Elena Torres-Padilla from the Institute of Epigenetics and Stem Cells of the Helmholtz Centre of Munich, Dr. Marcel Prax from the Paul Ehrlich Institute and Dr. Karla Rubio from the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research.

PhD of Pharmacology with Magna cum Laude at the University of Heidelberg. DAAD scholarship. Internist/Cardiologist from the University of Heidelberg. Member of the German Academy of Intern Medicine and Cardiology. Since 2017 Clinic and basic Cardiovascular Research at the hearth centre at the University of Cologne.

Dr. Karla Rubio is a postdoctoral researcher in Prof. Guillermo Barreto’s group at the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research, in collaboration with the Gly-CRRET unit at the UPEC University in France. Her research includes in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo translational models oriented to link RNA-epigenetic mechanisms in pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer, as investigator of the German clinical trial EMO-Lung for non-invasive lung cancer early diagnosis. Her scientific contributions have been recently awarded by the most important scientific and medical German societies.

Marcel Prax studied Biology followed by a PhD in microbiology. Since 2015, he is head of laboratory of the section “microbiological safety” at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institute. He is particularly interested in the characterization of bacterial strains and their physiological behavior in blood components. He has been involved in the establishment of bacterial reference strains for both platelet and red blood cell concentrates and coordinates international studies including Mexico to develop strategies that can be applied to increase the safety of blood transfusion worldwide.

Maria-Elena Torres-Padilla is Full Professor at the LMU and Director of the Institute of Epigenetics and Stem Cells at the Helmholtz Zentrum München. After her studies of biology at the National University of Mexico (UNAM), she received a doctoral degree from the University of Paris/Institut Pasteur. She completed post-doc studies at the University of Cambridge and the IGBMC in Strasbourg. She is member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation and has authored more than 75 publications.

Graduated from the University of Mexico, hematologist with Magna cum Laude PhD at University of Cologne. More than 100 publications. Participation in APEC Blood Safety Policy Forum 2014-19. Member of the Mexican Academy of Surgery and National Academy of Medicine. Awards: i.a. Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. General Director of the National Center of Blood Transfusion of the Mexican Ministry of Health 2008-19. Scientific Advisor at the Mexican Embassy in Germany since 2019.
