Lessons learnt from the 1st Darpa-type challenge launched in Europe

Joint European Disruptive Initiative | Prof. Thomas Hermans, André Loesekrug-Pietri

The goal of the Joint European Disruptive Initiative is to bring Europe and democracies in a leadership position in breakthrough technologies. It is launching Technology Challenges to push the frontiers of innovation, invent the next big thing, and provide our societies with a decisive competitive advantage, to ensure economic prosperity, strategic autonomy, and democratic resilience. It is the European Darpa.

JEDI is a common good agency with a radical new innovation governance system, a Foundation powered by Europe’s deeptech ecosystem, 4.100 JEDIs in 29 countries. While using Darpa’s methodology based on speed, highest expectations & massive risk-taking, JEDI is driven by European, humanistic values. Convinced that innovation can contribute to common-good, JEDI aims to make a significant contribution to the major societal challenge of our times.

JEDI launched the first Darpa-type Challenge in Europe in May 2020 – the JEDI Billion Molecules against Covid19 GrandChallenge – with an outstanding success so far: 130 teams from the very best institutions in the world participated, an exceptional Scientific Committee has been set-up (including the 2019 Nobel Prize in Medicine), and an estimated 54 billion molecules have been screened to date.
