Institutionalising Science Engagement

Institutionalising Science Engagement: the key to promote science literacy and informed decision-making in society

Science has enabled us to solve some of the biggest problems threatening humanity and continues to provide solutions to tackle global challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate emergency. However, science can only have a real impact in our lives if we engage everyone in the conversation. Scientists do the discoveries, but they cannot solve the world’s problems on their own. Rather, they share their findings with policymakers, enterprises and the society at large, so that solutions can be found collaboratively. But how can we improve information-sharing, and allow everyone to learn about and be involved in science? This has been the purpose of Science Engagement since its onset. Science Engagement consists in involving individuals outside of the scientific community in science initiatives, in order to contribute to improving science literacy and informed decision-making in society. Over the past decades, the field of Science Engagement has seen an extensive growth thanks to new funding opportunities and the beginning of an institutionalisation process. Nonetheless, more needs to be done to foster Science Engagement and break the walls between science and society. One way of doing this is to incentivise scientists and science-related institutions to promote Science Engagement initiatives and advocate for it in their own circles, and therefore reinforcing the institutionalisation of Science Engagement. Do you want to know how and what you can do to contribute? Join us for this workshop! You will be able to learn from experienced panelists, be part of the discussion and have the chance to get involved beyond this workshop.
