We will feature a world-renowned panel of doctors, scientists, educators, students and engineers sending a message of hope and empowerment in the field of disability inclusion.

We will see inspirational stories from Dr. Esraa El Bably – the first Arab Deaf Doctor; Dr. Justine Durno – Deaf Doctor at St. Thomas Hospital; from the globally acclaimed medical team from Aga Khan University Medical College – Dr. Adil Haider, Dr. Aysha Habib Khan, Dr. Habiba Thawer; from Deaf Reach Schools team – Usman Ghani, Rabia Aslam, Aaron Awasen; from ByteCorp tech innovators – Taha Baig, Muqsit Abbasi. Adil Haider

Aga Khan University Medical College

Dean

Dr Adil H. Haider is the Dean of the Aga Khan University Medical College and Professor of Surgery and Community Health Sciences. He is also an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Surgery at Howard University College of Medicine and founding member of the Clive O. Callender Surgical Outcomes Research Center. He is an alumnus of AKU’s MBBS programme, and also holds a Master’s degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is a practicing Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon and completed his residency training in General Surgery at New York Medical College / Westchester Medical Center, and fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care, and Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.​

Habiba Thawer

Aga Khan University Medical College

International Volunteer and Consultant

Dr. Thawer is a physiotherapist by profession and has been practicing in Canada for the last 20 years. She obtained her post-graduate education in Canada consisting of a Master of Science and a PhD in Rehabilitation Science. She is certified by the American Board of Forensic Professionals in the rating of impairment and disability.

She has a built a practice in Canada focusing on the assessment and treatment of sports injuries and has extensive experience with building and implementing multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary rehabilitation programs in the areas of chronic pain management, geriatric rehabilitation and women’s health. She serves as an independent accreditation consultant for CARF and a provider of continuing education in rehabilitation.

Dr. Thawer is serving as an international volunteer and consultant at the Aga Khan University and the Aga Khan University Hospital.

Aysha Habib Khan

Professor of Chemical Pathology & Consultant Chemical Pathologist

Dr Aysha Habib Khan is Professor of chemical pathology & consultant chemical pathologist at the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and Bone Consultant at Department of Medicine, Aga Khan University. She is an alumnus of AKU post graduate residency program. She is a fellow of Royal College of Physicians (Edin) and fellow of College of Pathologist, Pakistan.

Justine Durno

Trainee Histopathologist

Dr. Justine Durno is the only deaf doctor in the UK with a sign language interpreter. She was born in Glasgow to a deaf family and after mainstream primary education there, she attended Mary Hare School for the deaf in Newbury, Berkshire and obtained a BSc (Hons) in Anatomy before studying medicine.

Dr. Justine Durno is currently a specialist trainee in Histopathology. She has an interest in forensic pathology and hopes to eventually specialise in this field. Dr. Durno uses her experiences as a Deaf female doctor, and the wider experiences of the d/Deaf community, to conclude on what changes need to happen for d/Deaf achievement to progress, including developing more Deaf schools, and Teachers of the Deaf, encouraging not repressing the use of sign language, recognising the social model of d/Deafness, and celebrating the d/Deaf community.

Esraa El Bably

Dental Clinic Egypt

General Dentist

Dr. Esraa El Bably is the first Arab Deaf Doctor with hearing loss on both ears since birth to become a dentist and open her own clinic. The first Arad Deaf Doctor speaker at the United Nations, member of the Egyptian dentistry committee for youth and women. Dr. El Bably acquired second level excellence in the First National Science Day for private universities, among Ten of the Most Inspiring Women in Egypt, Member of the UN Agora Team.

Erica Tandori

Monash University

Erica Tandori is a legally blind artist, researcher and academic. She explores the intersections of art, vision loss and science. Tandori’s PhD focused on capturing the entoptic effects of her retinal disease through art, conveying an ‘eye-witness’ account of blindness. As resident artist at the Rossjohn Infection and Immunity Lab, Monash University, Erica creates multi-sensory, multi-modal artworks communicating biomedical research to blind and low-vision audiences. This inspires people of all ages and abilities to learn, understand and appreciate the wonders of science.
