Fungi: Alternative Languages for Coexistence

Museo del Hongo | AnaRosa Ibanez, Nicolas Oyarce, Juan Ferrer

Artists claim justice for the mysterious Fungi Kingdom.

Fungi have been neglected since the beginning of biology’s history. Investigators have tried placing them together with plants or bacteria, failing to acknowledge their singularity and behavioral intelligence. After being declared as an independent natural kingdom in 1969, today Fungi are understood as of utmost relevance for natural balance as they perpetuate the ecological cycle by decomposing matter. In times when human activity is altering our whole ecosystem, drawing inspiration from Fungi could contribute to the sustainability of humanity’s future.

Museo del Hongo is a transdisciplinary collective that focuses on the design and implementation of mycology–and–art exhibitions. Understanding the fungal relational system has proven to affect and dynamize our outdated social paradigms by introducing concepts such as mycelial interconnection, mycoremediation, and matter decomposition as crucial aspects of coexistence.

For Berlin Science Week, they will present some of their recent digital works, discussing how science engagement can be revolutionary for the education of the global community, allowing the museum space to become a lab or a playground for the integration of art and science.
