Political Talk: Paving the Quantum Way

We celebrate the future of quantum technologies with young students from all over Europe.

How can the government support companies as well as scientific institutions with developing Quantum Technologies? How can they motivate and support young scientists to find their way into that thriving field of research? What are the present and future strategies of the BMBF and European Commission in this area?

German Federal Minister of Education and Research Anja Karliczek will discuss these and related questions together with Markus Krutzik, group lead at Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenzmessung and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Chiara Macchiavello, coordinator of the European Coordination and Support Action (CSA) on Education in Quantum Technologies of the Quantum Flagship of the European Commission and Jan Goetz, CEO and co-founder of IQM Finland Oy.

The talk will take place within the framework of Germany’s EU Council Presidency and will be streamed online live from FUTURIUM Berlin.

Dr Jan Goetz is a quantum physicist and co-founder of IQM, building revolutionary quantum computers. In a very short time, IQM has assembled an exceptional team of international quantum experts developing quantum processors and devices to tackle the hardest challenges humanity is facing. IQM has already yielded breakthroughs and gained international attention for their pioneering work. Jan received his PhD on superconducting quantum circuits from TU Munich and continued as a Postdoc in Helsinki at Aalto University.

Group Lead at Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenzmessung and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Markus Krutzik is head of the Joint Lab Integrated Quantum Sensors operated by Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. R&D activities focus on the development of integrated atomic systems for frequency metrology, timing and field sensing applications, especially for operation in a space environment.

Chiara Macchiavello

Professor of the Physics of Quantum Computation

Chiara Macchiavello received her PhD in 1995 from the University of Pavia. She then spent two years at the University of Oxford with a Marie Curie postdoctoral position. In 1998 she became research assistant at the University of Pavia, where she is now Professor of the Physics of Quantum Computation. She has made relevant contributions in various aspects of theoretical quantum information science, including pioneer work in quantum error correction and quantum algorithms, quantum privacy amplification and quantum cloning. For her work she was awarded a prestigeous prize from Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in 2006.
