Prof. Dr. Markus Rex leads the section „Atmospheric Physics“ of the Alfred-Wegener-Institute and is full professor at the University of Potsdam. He studied Physics, Meteorology and Geophysics in Braunschweig and Göttingen, received a PhD from the FU Berlin, habilitated at the University of Bremen, has worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology in the US, was Erskine fellow at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and has teached at the FU Berlin and the University of Bremen. In 2019-2020 he led MOSAiC, the largest Arctic expedition ever.

Dr Stefanie Arndt is a sea-ice physicist at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven. She also lectures in the Sea Ice Physics master’s programme at Universität Hamburg. At the AWI, she coordinates the sea ice programme at the German Antarctic research station Neumayer III and the section’s field work in the ice-covered Southern Ocean. She has participated in 9 ship-based and 2 land-based expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, including the MOSAiC expedition, in which she led the international sea ice team on board during the third leg of the expedition.

Dr Adam Levy is a science journalist and climate change communicator. They have produced award winning scientific films and podcasts for publications such as Nature, Scientific American and PBS. They have a doctorate in atmospheric physics, and created ClimateAdam, a YouTube channel that makes climate change engaging and accessible. Adam has hosted interviews for Falling Walls since 2016, but this is the first year they have had the opportunity to speak with each and every winner.
