Why did Einstein equations change completely our understanding of gravity?
We often hear that according to General Relativity, our spacetime is curved. But we often miss the deep meaning of this statement: it implies that in every point, there is an invisible field, a bit like the electromagnetic field, but playing a different role: this field can dilate space and time! This concept is not that difficult to understand if, like Einstein, we accept to change completely our intuition concerning the nature of gravity. The dilation of space and time can be observed very concretely, for instance in gravitational wave detectors, or in several observations probing the expansion of the universe. These concepts will be explained in the most possible intuitive and accessible way.
This presentation will be given by Prof. Dr. Julien Lesgourgues, after a brief introduction by Prof. Dr. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon who will emphasize the incredible interweaving between physics and mathematics in the theory of general relativity and discuss the key-collaborations in this field between Einstein and both Grossmann and Hilbert in 1913 and in 1915.

European Research Council
Professor Jean-Pierre Bourguignon has been appointed President ad interim and will be in office from 27 July 2020 until the next ERC President is selected and takes up duties. He was the President of the European Research Council from January 2014 until December 2019. Prior to that, he was the Director of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS) from 1994 till 2013. This international research institute located near Paris, France, was built as the European counterpart of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He was also the first ERC Panel Chair in Mathematics, for Starting Grants.
