Meet our Falling Walls speaker who is breaking the wall to holistic sustainability!

The Falling Walls Conversations offer the unique chance to engage in a live conversation with Arun Majumdar. The Jay Precourt Provostial Chair Professor at Stanford University is a speaker at the Falling Walls Breakthrough Day 2022.

Majumdar is also the Dean of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Senior Fellow and former Director of the Precourt Institute for Energy. He approaches sustainability research in an integrated way, by merging the scholarship and educational programs of the Stanford University School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences with the institutes’ excellence in sparking interdisciplinary collaboration.

Majumdar served in the Obama administration as the Founding Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) and Acting Under Secretary of Energy. He was also the Vice President for Energy at Google and advises numerous business in the energy innovation ecosystem. He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, US National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Engage in a live conversation with global science leaders at the Falling Walls Science Summit 2022! The Falling Walls Breakthrough Conversations on 8–9 November give you the unique opportunity to meet outstanding scientists, emerging innovators and science entrepreneurs via our live stream.

Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and in partnership with Springer Nature, the Breakthrough Conversations offer the extraordinary chance to attend a live streamed interview with breakthrough thinkers and to engage with them in real-time online discussions.

The 25-minute-interviews will be moderated by Springer Nature editors. The live stream will be integrated into a Zoom call. If you have a question to the guest, you can use the ‘raise hand’ feature in Zoom and the moderator will be informed. The moderator will get back to in the course of the interview and you will be able to ask your question to the guest live on air. Please note that in case of many questions from the audience, we may not be able to consider all of them.

Arun Majumdar

Stanford University

Dr. Arun Majumdar is the Jay Precourt Provostial Chair Professor at Stanford University, Dean of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Senior Fellow and former Director of the Precourt Institute for Energy. He served in the Obama administration as the Founding Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) and Acting Under Secretary of Energy. He served as a Science Envoy for the US Department of State and currently serves as the Chair of the US Secretary of Energy Advisory Board. Dr. Majumdar was also the Vice President for Energy at Google and advises numerous business in the energy innovation ecosystem. He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, US National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1985 and his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989.

Filipe Almeida

Springer Nature

Filipe studied the influence of the biomechanics of the tumor microenvironment at The Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, and most recently developed composite biomaterials for the delivery of anticancer drugs at NOVA University of Lisbon. Previously, at Queen Mary University of London, where he obtained his PhD in 2015, where he studied how skin cells respond to their microenvironment by using advanced microfabricated biomaterials, and developed micropatterned surfaces for high-content imaging and drug screening. Filipe’s interests span mechanobiology, biomechanics, cellular imaging, tissue engineering, nanotheranostics and cancer therapies. Filipe joined Nature Biomedical Engineering in November 2021 and he is based in Berlin.
