Quarraisha Abdool Karim, the Associate Scientific Director of the UNAIDS Collaborating Centre for HIV Research and Policy (CAPRISA), is an infectious diseases epidemiologist who made ground-breaking contributions in understanding the evolution of the HIV epidemic in South Africa and its impact on society. Her policy work in advancing Aids prevention in women, while simultaneously fighting for the rights of people affected by the disease, have contributed to her reputation as one of the world’s foremost medical and scientific authorities in the field of HIV and Aids research.
