Marja Makarow is Director of Biocenter Finland. She is former Vice-President of the Finnish Research Council – Academy of Finland, Chief Executive of the European Science Foundation in Strasbourg France and Vice-Rector for Research and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Helsinki. In 2008-2011 she advised the EU Commissioner for Research and Innovation in the European Research Area Board ERAB, and the Finnish Government in the Prime Minister’s Council for Research and Innovation. She has co-created the novel Aalto University launched in 2010 and the Tampere University launched in 2019 as Vice-Chair and Chair of the founding boards, respectively. Marja Makarow is Governing Board member the European Institute for Innovation and Technology EIT since 2012 and a newly appointed member of the Pilot Advisory Board of the European Innovation Council EIC.
