Following his studies of geophysics and physics at Frankfurt University, Joachim Ullrich held positions at GSI, Darmstadt, at the Kansas State University, and at the University of Missouri. He was chair of Experimental Physics at the University of Freiburg, before he was appointed as Director at the Max-Planck Institute of Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg. Since 2012 he is President of PTB, the German National Metrology Institute. He has published more than 500 research papers and received several awards. Furthermore, he is Vice-President of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) of the Meter Convention, as well as President of the Consultative Committee for the International Units (CCU).
