My project would like to realize evidence-based education to meet demands for improved education standards. My project collects so called ‘educational big data’ from LMS and digital textbooks. The collected data is immediately analyzed and used for effective feedback to both learners and teachers. The main concept is real-time education support. My project has developed a learning analytics foundation for real-time lecture support. For example, the real-time analytics helps detect students who cannot keep up with classes. The learning analytics platform provides summarized materials according to students’ understanding level. It also enables us to predict students’ grades. These types of support result in improved learning capacity.

Atsushi Shimada

Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering, Kyushu University

Atsushi Shimada received the M.E. and D.E. degrees from Kyushu University in 2007. He is a professor of Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering, Kyushu University. He also worked as a JST-PRESTO researcher since 2015 to 2019. His current research interests include learning analytics, pattern recognition, media processing and image processing. He received Background Models Challenge 2012 The First Place (2012), PRMU research award (2013), SBM-RGBD Challenge The First Place (2017), IPSJ/IEEE-Computer Society Young Computer Researcher Award (2019), CELDA Best Paper Award (2019).
