The nominating institution TU Munich on the breakthrough:

Reconstructing our 3D world from moving cameras is at the heart of computer vision. It fuels endless applications ranging from augmented reality and computer animation over 3D perception for self-driving cars to digital heritage and medical imaging. Daniel Cremers made groundbreaking advances – he introduced the first convex formulations that guarantee provably optimal dense reconstructions, he introduced highly efficient algorithms, and he pioneered direct methods for tracking moving cameras.
